Visiting Miami or Southern Florida This Year? How to Stay Safe When Driving

Each year, tens of millions of visitors come to Florida to enjoy summer in the sunshine state. If you are among them, you may be bringing your own car or renting a vehicle here. Driving in Florida has its own challenges, however, and if you’re new to the region you need to be aware of your risks for car accidents.

If you are unfamiliar with Miami and other cities, you may be distracted by following road directions, for example. You may not be used to driving with bright glare or the heat, both of which can be distractions. In addition, Miami streets can get quite busy, which can put you at risk of an accident.

If you plan on driving on Miami, Hollywood, or any South Florida region, you’ll want to take some extra precautions to avoid car accidents:

1) Have a DUI safety plan.

If you’re going to be enjoying the famous nightlife of Miami or southern Florida during your stay, make sure you have a safe route home to avoid DUI accidents. Program a taxi apps in your phone so you can always reach someone for a safe ride home. This is especially important if you don’t know anyone in the area and can’t call a friend or family member for help. Make sure you have extra money on hand to pay for a ride back to your hotel.

2) Make sure your car is ready for the Florida heat.

Whether you’re driving a rental or your own vehicle, make sure it has enough coolant and is in good enough shape to handle extreme heat. Make sure the windshields are clear and allow you to see even with the sun’s glare. Check that the tires are in good shape to get you to destinations safely.

3) Keep in mind driving in Florida may be different than driving in your home state.

If you’ll be driving in Miami when you’re used to driving in a smaller town in the Midwest, for example, the experience will be very different. Make sure you know what to expect and give yourself lots of time to get your destination. If you’re worried about your ability to drive safely southern Florida, consider hiring a driver. This way, you can focus on enjoying your tourism experience without having to worry about car accidents.
