Do You Have a Drive Safe Plan for the Holidays?

During the holidays, drunk driving accidents in Homestead and other Florida communities may be more of a risk as many holiday events include alcohol. In addition, the stress of the holiday season can sometimes lead to fatigued or distracted driving. To stay safe this season, you will need to have a plan in place to get home safely if you have been drinking. Your drive safe plan should include:

1) A list of numbers you can call.

Have a list of numbers you can call in the event that you cannot get home safely. Your list should include taxi companies, friends and family, and local hotels where you can stay for the night until you can get home safely. Consider keeping a paper copy in your wallet in case something happens to your cell phone. On your phone, consider installing an app that lets you contact local hotels or taxis for a safe drive home. There are apps specifically designed to prevent drunk driving.

2) A first aid and road emergency kit.

Your road emergency kit should contain everything you need in the event that you get stuck. This should mean flares, a first aid kit, basic tools, water, food, and a change of clothing. Consider adding a warm sleeping bad to your trunk, too. If you find yourself unable to get home safely and have no other option to get home, it may be safer to sleep in a sleeping bag in your car rather than risk driving home drunk.

3) Extra cash in your glove compartment or wallet.

Paying for a taxi or motel costs money and you want to have cash on hand so that you can make a safe decision to get home responsibly. Consider placing the money somewhere where it is more difficult to reach – such as the back trunk or deep inside your wallet – so that you will not be tempted to spend the money on anything else.

4) A promise to others that you will drive safe.

Consider your own reasons for not driving drunk. Is it because you have a family counting on you or because you want to set a good example for your children? Make a promise with these loved ones that neither of you will ever drive drunk or get in a car with someone who has been drinking. Knowing that someone you love is holding you accountable may be just the reason you need to make a smarter decision after drinking.
