New Year’s Eve: Staying Safe On the Roads

New Year’s Eve parties often involve alcohol, and this is the time of year when many drunk driving accidents happen. Unfortunately, people celebrating the new year sometimes make poor decisions. Since people stay up late, the effects of alcohol can also be amplified by fatigue.

There are a few things you’ll want to do make sure that you ring in the new year safely:

  • Plan ahead. Have a safe way home if you know you’ll be drinking or if there is any chance at all you will be drinking. It’s important to have multiple options, so if one doesn’t work out you still have a backup plan. For example, rideshare and taxis may be very busy on New Year’s Eve. Try not to rely on those. Have a designated driver, too, and a plan to stay at a hotel if that fails. Having multiple ways to get home can make sure you always have a safe option.
  • Consider staying put. Consider throwing a party at your own home. This way, you can control alcohol consumption and can make sure no one drives drunk after your party. You also have a safe place to stay after the clock strikes midnight.
  • Think about celebrating sober. Alcohol-free events are becoming more popular and they can be a good option for you to ring in the year without the subsequent hangover and danger.
  • Consider others on the road. Even if you’re being responsible and being careful about staying sober for the new year, unfortunately not every motorist does the same. If you’re driving home after New Year’s Eve, keep an eye out for drunk drivers. If you notice someone driving erratically, stay well out of their way and call police to report the driver before they harm themselves or someone else.
