How to Prevent Drunk Driving Accidents in Homestead and Your Community This Holiday Season

Drunk driving accidents in Homestead and other communities continue to be a problem, especially at this time of year. These collisions are entirely preventable and even one drunk driving accident is too much. Luckily, there are many things you can do to stay safe this holiday season:

1) Install an app on your phone.

Make it easy to call for a cab if you are out and need a safe ride home. You can install apps which make it easy for you to call a cab in your area. Make sure to keep your contact list up to date, too, so you can call friends and family for a safe ride home if you need one.

2) Stash some extra money in your wallet for a cab home.

Keep some bills in a separate part of your wallet, so you won’t be tempted to spend them. This can be a great way to ensure you can pay for a cab ride home when you need one. Credit cards can also be a great source of emergency funds after a night out.

3) Designate a driver.

Designated drivers are a great option if you are going to an event in a group. Designated drivers can get you home safely and can also keep an eye out to ensure everyone stays safe.

4) Plan ahead.

If you will be going to an event where you know alcohol may be served, have a plan. Come up with at least three ways you can get home safely. Make it easy to avoid drunk driving so you can make the right decision.

5) Consider leaving your car at home more often.

Getting a cab to events can reduce the temptation to drink and drive. Look for shuttles or consider hiring a driver with a group of friends to ensure there is someone sober to get you home at the end of the night.

6) Consider going alcohol-free.

Consider going to family-friendly and alcohol-free events. You will be less tempted and will be less likely to drink and drive if you are going to events where alcohol will simply not be served. If you are hosting your own event, consider making it alcohol-free. If you want to serve alcohol, serve moderate amount and stop serving early in the evening. Offer guests a room for the night or designate a driver to get everyone home safely. Remember: you are responsible for guests’ safety, so make sure no one drives home drunk from your event.

7) Spread the message.

Talk to others about your plans for avoiding drunk driving. Be a good role model and talk to your children about the importance of getting home safely. Even if your children are young, make sure they know they can always call you for a safe ride home if they need to.

If you have been injured by a  drunk driver, you may qualify for a civil claim to seek compensation for your injuries and damages. To find out more, contact Flaxman Law Group for a free accident consultation.
