Why This Time of Year Can Put You at Risk of Accidents

The end of the year and the holiday season are busy for most of us. There are family get-togethers, special events, holiday shopping, and holiday decorating to get done. In many industries, workplaces are busier. These various elements can make us all more vulnerable to car accidents, workplace accidents, and other types of injuries.

Here, we take a look at why you may be more vulnerable at this time of year, and what you can do about it. Here are the risks:

  • Fatigue-related accidents. With more to do during the holidays, it’s easy to feel tired all the time. Fatigue can be made worse by late-night holiday celebrations (which cause sleep disruptions) and heavier foods. Fatigue can make us more vulnerable to every kind of accident, from car accidents to workplace injuries. The best way to reduce this risk is to prioritize your sleep. Take an extra nap if you can and skip out on a few holiday events, if you need to, to get enough sleep. If you’re having sleepless nights or insomnia, see a doctor for help.
  • Distraction. The long to-do list at this time of year is a culprit here, too. When we’re focused on the holiday dinners and card-sending and gift giving and festivities, our focus is divided. It’s easier to make mistakes that lead to serious injury. The best way to reduce your risk here is to stick with the holiday traditions that matter to you and discard the rest. This can reduce the amount you have to do. Get organized, too. Write down everything in lists or in your planner, so you don’t have to think about unrelated items when you’re driving or working.
  • Holiday-related accidents. The holidays mean more decorations, and these can put us at risk of traffic accidents if they’re too bright or distracting. In our homes and workplaces, decorations can be a fire risk and trip and fall risk. Reduce the risk by making sure all your decorations are safe and none show signs of wear and tear. If you’re hanging decorations outside your home, make sure they won’t cause unreasonable distractions for drivers.
  • Illness. Unfortunately, holiday season overlaps with the flu season. Trying to drive with a fever or after taking over-the-counter medication puts you and others on the road at risk. If you’re ill, stay home and avoid driving. If you need to get to a doctor’s appointment, have a family member drive you.
  • Crime. Unfortunately, crime and fraud can increase during the holidays as perpetrators see opportunities in shoppers. Keep an eye on your personal possessions and park in well-lit areas when you’re shopping or celebrating. Check your bank accounts and credit reports after the holidays and report any suspicious activity right away.
