Mercedes-Benz has announced an ambitious plan called Vision Zero. The goal is to offer accident-free driving for all Mercedes-Benz cars by the year 2025. By 2030, the company has a goal of greatly reducing injuries and car accident deaths in its cars.
How does the car manufacturer hope to do that? They will be using:

- Pre-Safe, an anticipatory technology designed to prevent accidents
- Partnerships with the City of London and other cities to make roads safer
- Anonymous driving data
- A Road Safety Dashboard to identify and address high-risk road areas before accidents happen
- Surveys of roads in the Netherlands and other countries to identify high-risk areas
- Requests of drivers to consent to sharing their driving data to help prevent future accidents
- A pilot project to detect and warn drivers of black ice on the roads
- The future MB.OS platform for the company’s vehicles, which will use better sensors and control systems to respond to dangers on the road faster
- Autonomous systems in cars to reduce the impact of driver error
Is Technology the Answer?
Vision Zero aims to make roads safer for bicyclists, pedestrians, and cars. It hopes to do so through technology, not only by changing the tech in the company’s cars, but also through research and partnerships with cities and countries.
There’s no doubt that technology in cars has helped us make the roads safer. Rear cameras, seatbelts, warning system, and other modern technology alert drivers and give them more tools behind the wheel to drive more safely.
