Staying in the Driver’s Seat When it Comes to Car Accidents

Some people who are injured in car crashes in Hollywood and Florida are injured through no fault of their own. Even if you are a very careful driver, other motorists may make poor decisions which cause serious injuries for you and your passengers. However, you are not totally without control. There are ways you can stay in the driver’s seat and at least reduce your risk of a car crash:

  • Look out for those who run red lights. Some motorists try to slip in as the light changes and unfortunately at intersections this aggressive move can cause devastating T-bone accidents. Since many red-light runners step on the gas to “get through” a light, the extra force can lead to fatalities. Even when the light turns and it is your right away, check for anyone who fails to stop.
  • Drive defensively. Scan the road ahead of you and always think at least three moves ahead. While you cannot control how other drivers drive, driving defensively lets you spot potential problems before they are hazards and respond appropriately, which helps you avoid collisions.
  • Keep a safe distance. Tailgating increases the likelihood of a rear-end crash if the person in front of you slams on the brakes for any reason. Leave more room in bad weather and in slippery conditions.
  • Consider your conditions. Get into the habit of checking road work conditions, traffic reports, and weather before you drive. This can help you plan. Even if you are just going a short distance, knowing how to avoid road closures or knowing to slow down in bad weather can keep you safer. If you do need to drive through more risky conditions, such as bad weather, keep both hands on the steering wheel, slow down, and think ahead.
  • Keep your car in good shape. Sometimes, other drivers act unexpectedly. When this happens, you may need to suddenly speed up or hit the brakes or move out of the way fast. Keeping your car in good conditions means your vehicle responds appropriately if you need to maneuver to avoid a crash.

Unfortunately, you will not always have control of every driving situation. Taking the above steps will reduce your risk, but if you are injured in a car accident caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to pursue compensation under Florida law.
