Vision Impairment and Car Accidents

To get a driver’s license in Colorado or Florida, you need to be able to prove your vision meets specific requirements. However, over time vision problems can affect your driving, putting you at risk of car collisions. In car crashes, facial injuries can also put your eyesight in danger.

Vision Problems Can Lead to Car Accidents

Vision problems can happen to anyone, but they can be especially common in seniors. Vision issues that can lead to car accidents include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Nearsightedness or farsightedness
  • Astigmatism
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Failure to update eyeglass prescriptions
  • Visual field loss
  • Failure to wear corrective lenses, as required on a license
  • Negligent follow-up with an eye doctor for vision symptoms

Drivers in both Colorado and Florida are expected to make sure they are physically fit to drive. If motorists ignore serious vision problems or drive when they can’t see properly, they can be held liable if their actions cause injuries.

Vision Problems from Car Accidents

The impact of a car collision can cause serious and vision-threatening injuries, including:

  • Cuts. Flying glass and other objects can cut your eyelids or the eye itself. This can lead to corneal abrasions, which affect the clear part at the front of your eye. Corneal abrasions can cause light sensitivity and pain as well as permanent harm to your vision.
  • Black eyes. A black eye happens when the area around your eye is bruised, even if the eye itself isn’t injured. A black eye can lead to blurred vision or in some cases can include bleeding within the eye. This more serious injury can cause vision loss, loss of mobility of the eye, blurry vision, and even loss of consciousness.
  • Head injuries. While head injuries themselves don’t affect the eye, they can lead to vision problems. They can also be life-threatening, so it’s important to treat any head injury as a potential emergency.
  • Detached retina. The retina is at the back of the eye and it can peel away from the rest of the eye. It can cause flashes of lights as well as blurred vision. If you suspect a detached retina it’s important to get emergency help right away, since this condition can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated quickly.
  • Orbital fracture. This injury involves any fracture of the bones around the eye. Severe fractures may require surgery and all such fractures need to be investigated by an experienced doctor to make sure the eye wasn’t injured as well.
  • Binocular vision disorder (BVD). This type of head injury causes injury to the muscles and nerves that control eye movement. This can lead to double vision, eye fatigue, and other significant symptoms.

I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
