Unfortunately, motorcyclists face additional safety challenges because their vehicles offer fewer layers of protection than a car, which surrounds passengers. Cars are also sometimes negligent when driving around motorcyclists and take added risks which put motorcyclists in danger.

Traffic lights are an important part of street design and they are created to control traffic flow while preventing motor vehicle collisions. Given accident rates in general and the number of intersection collisions in Hollywood and other cities, however, many experts feel that more can be done to make streets and traffic lights safer. One of those potential solutions is “smart” traffic lights.

Smart virtual traffic lights developed by scientists promise to reduce collisions, red light violations, and congestion. The lights work by allowing cars to communicate with each other and with traffic light systems. If two or more cars are approaching an intersection, the system would make the lights turn green for the car or cars with the right of way and red for everyone else. If there is only one car approaching the intersection, the traffic lights would allow that car to drive right through on a green light.

According to experts at the World Bank and the World Resources Institute (WRI), many people are moving to cities. In fact, half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, which means that these regions are expanding rapidly with new buildings and roads. It also means more traffic congestion, with cities creating 1.2 million traffic accident fatalities annually.

Many safety experts say that it does not have to be this way and that cities can become safe places with good, sustainable designs. The problem, some critics feel, is that current cities are not always designed for future population growth or even to handle the current population numbers, creating congestion and other problems.

Could public transportation help reduce car accidents in Hollywood and other communities? Many city planners and safety experts think so. While public transit accidents in Hollywood and other communities can still occur, they are far less common than car accidents. In addition, studies have found that better transit systems in cities can reduce the risks of traffic accidents overall.

Public transit may reduce car accident rates by:

1) Offering an alternative to drunk driving.

When trying to reduce drunk driving accidents in Florida and other parts of the country, it is important to give drivers an alternative to getting behind the wheel after drinking. When motorists can easily hop on an affordable bus or train after drinking, it may be easier to make the right decision. If drivers have no access to transportation and need to wait for a friend or need to pay a lot for a taxi, they may be more tempted to simply drive themselves home.

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions that focus on getting healthier or wealthier. While these can improve the quality of our lives, keep in mind that the way you drive can make just as significant an impact on what 2015 is like for you. If you are a motorist, driving is likely the most dangerous thing you do every day. By becoming a safer driver, you can dramatically improve your chances of having a healthy and safe 2015. Here are six resolutions you can make today that could help you drive more safely:

1) Pledge to avoid drunk driving.

Drunk driving in Hollywood and other cities remains a leading cause of collisions, especially around the holiday season. If you have any New Year’s Eve plans, make sure you have a good plan for getting home safely. Better yet, create a plan for getting home safely every day of the year. Agree with friends to offer each other drives home when needed and sign no drinking and driving pledges. Avoiding driving if you have been drinking is one of the simplest ways to lower your risk of collisions.

If you are still shopping for the holidays and have drivers on your list, there are some great last-minute gift ideas that could help the motorists on your list stay safe for years to come:

1) Rear-view cameras.

Back-over accidents in Miami and other communities are especially tragic because they often involve children. These accidents take place because children can easily stay hidden in the blind spots of a car if they are playing directly behind a vehicle. Rear-view cameras allow a driver to see far more clearly behind the vehicle, which can help them avoid back-over accidents, parking lot accidents, and other collisions. Rear-view cameras sometimes come bundled with GPS systems as well.

Thanksgiving is coming up at the end of the month and many families are making holiday plans now. If you will be making plans to travel to see your family for the holidays, now is the time to plan for safety. If you are taking a road trip as part of Thanksgiving this year, you will want to enjoy a safe family get-together by:

1) Getting your car tuned up. Make an appointment to get your car tuned up now. If there are any problems with brakes, tires, or other systems you will want to have plenty of time to fix these issues before you have to drive. Taking a longer road trip puts added stress on your car and you want to make sure that your car is up to the task.

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, Miami and the rest of South Florida offer a range of services for visitors. One of those services involves renting vehicles so that tourists can explore the region. Unfortunately, while handy, these vehicles do not come without hazards:

  • Car rentals. Renting a car can help you explore more of Miami and South Florida, but unfortunately it can also be a recipe for a collision. Miami traffic can be quite heavy and visitors may be distracted by holiday plans and unfamiliar with the city, making crashes more likely. If you need to rent a car in Miami, consider getting familiar with the routes you need to take before getting in the car. Check out the car to make sure it is in good condition before getting in to drive.

Car manufacturers are constantly rolling out new safety features and technology and many people look to the latest in technology to help prevent car accidents and injuries. From weight-sensitive child seats to smart roads, there is no doubt that technology could help prevent crashes and save lives in the future. However, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, two of the simplest things that every driver can do could help prevent well over 100 000 injuries annually – at no cost and with very little effort.

Researchers concluded that 54,000 serious traffic accident-related injuries could be prevented each year if everyone wore seatbelts. The same CDC study found that a further 82,000 serious car accident injuries could be prevented annually if all motorists drove with a blood alcohol limit of under 0.08 grams per deciliter.
